Snowmobile Safaris in Lapland: Everything You Need to Know

Snowmobile safaris in Lapland are an unforgettable way to experience the Arctic wilderness. Whether you’re chasing the Northern Lights, exploring frozen forests, or just looking for a new kind of adventure, guided snowmobile tours offer an exciting, safe, and scenic way to discover Finnish Lapland — especially in Levi, one of the top winter destinations in the region.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know before joining one of our snowmobile tours in Lapland — including how the tours work, what to wear, and safety tips.

How Do Snowmobile Tours in Lapland Work?

Our Levi snowmobile safaris begin with a warm welcome and a quick but essential briefing. We provide you with thermal clothing, boots, gloves, a helmet, and balaclava. Clothing is always included in the price of the snowmobile tours, but you can also rent it from us for your other activities!

Once you are dressed, we’ll go outside and your guide will show you how to operate the snowmobile and explain the rules for safe driving. Then we’ll head of to explore the tracks, starting easy to get everyone comfortable driving. Your guide will be checking on you and stopping to give some tips if someone is struggling and also to take photos of you in the stunning Lapland landscapes.

We offer various tour lengths and difficulty levels, from family-friendly routes to longer adventures for experienced riders. Two people typically share one snowmobile, taking turns driving and riding as a passenger.

A single driving supplement can be purchased for those who would like to drive the snowmobile alone, with out a passenger. We recommend single driving supplements to those who are traveling alone or if your group has an uneven number of people, as otherwise you might have to share the snowmobile with a stranger.

Important: You need to bring your physical driving license (plastic card, not just a photo or digital version) to drive a snowmobile in Finland. No license = no driving (even on private tours).

What to Wear for a Snowmobile Safari

While we provide outer thermal gear, it’s crucial to wear several warm layers underneath. We recommend:

  • A thermal base layer (top and bottom, preferably merino wool)
  • A fleece or wool mid-layer
  • Thick socks (preferably wool)
  • A neck warmer or scarf

Avoid cotton, which loses warmth when wet. Dress like you would for skiing or spending hours outdoors in sub-zero temperatures. You can also read this article to learn more about the proper attire you will need during your holiday in Lapland.

Safety Tips for Snowmobiling in Lapland

Safety is our top priority on all our snowmobile tours in Lapland. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Always follow your guide’s instructions.
  • Keep a safe distance between snowmobiles.
  • Do not overtake and please ride in a straight line avoiding zigzagging or slaloming. Always stay on the right side of the track so that others—like locals or people coming from the other direction—can safely pass us.
  • Use the hand signals your guide demonstrates before the tour.
  • Stay on the marked tracks — it is not allowed to go off-track, especially in protected areas like the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, where we ride in Levi.

Driving off-track can damage delicate Arctic nature and is strictly forbidden by Finnish law. In national park zones, we must respect the environment and local wildlife by sticking to permitted routes only.
