When Does the Snow Season Start in Levi and Rovaniemi?

Winter in Lapland doesn’t follow the calendar — it follows the snow.

❄️ The first snow in Lapland often arrives in late October or early November.

⛄️ Permanent snow cover usually sets in by mid-November, especially in Levi. Rovaniemi is 2 hours South of Levi, so there the snow sets usually a little later.

🎿 First ski lifts open already in October, but more usually open during November and December, thanks to snowmaking and natural snowfall.

So if you’re heading to Lapland in early winter, there’s a strong chance you’ll get a snowy, magical experience. However, most activities don’t begin until December, when we usually have enough snow and ice.

What Is Early Winter Like in Levi?

Early winter (November to early December) is ideal for travelers looking for:

  • Quieter trails and fewer crowds
  • Excellent chances of seeing the Northern Lights
  • The first snowfall and some skiing
  • A peaceful, magical landscape as the forests turn white

If you’re visiting Levi in November, you’ll likely enjoy snow-dusted forests, and the mystical twilight of the Arctic.

When Should You Visit Lapland?

Lapland’s winter evolves throughout the season. Here’s a guide to help you choose the best time to visit based on what kind of experience you’re looking for:

  • Sky lights up with incredible colors, from deep purples to pink, orange and blue
  • Christmas season brings a magical atmosphere
  • Cold and snowy, but beautiful and still

🌞 January – Deep Winter and Frosted Forests

  • Coldest month, often dropping below -20°C
  • Snow-covered trees transform into “cauliflower trees” – thick with powder and frost
  • Ideal for photographers and true winter lovers
  • Northern Lights are visible at night
  • Days slowly start to get longer, but light is still limited

February – The Most Magical Month

  • Cold and snowy, but sunlight begins to return
  • Still excellent for cauliflower trees and deep winter landscapes
  • Northern Lights are visible at night
  • Golden sunlight at midday, pastel skies — stunning for photos
  • Great balance of winter activities, daylight, and Arctic atmosphere

☀️ March – Longer Days and Perfect Snow

  • More sunshine and usually milder daytime temperatures
  • Snow is still deep and good for all winter sports
  • Northern Lights still visible at night
  • Great month for those who love sun + snow

🎿 April – Sunny, Slushy Spring Snow

  • Warm sunny days, ideal for relaxed snow fun
  • Snow starts to get soft and slushy — great for laid-back skiing and snowshoeing
  • Still snowmobiling and enjoying winter, but in a lighter jacket
  • The most “spring-like” winter month
